A lone cyclist in Yorkshire

At HA&W we have a long history of charity fundraising challenges, with 20 years of walking – and more recently running and even rowing – behind us.

And we’re delighted to announce this year’s challenge in aid of the Loughborough Area Food Bank.

Alasdair will be cycling the Way of the Roses

For this year’s event, Alasdair will be taking on the challenge of cycling from Morecambe in Lancashire to Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, along the route known as the “Way of the Roses”.

The route is 275km (170 miles) long, with 2,250 metres of “climbing”, and Alasdair (plus a friend) aims to complete the route in three days, starting on 28th June.

“This will be an unsupported ride,” Alasdair explains. “We will take everything we need with us on the bikes, stopping at local B&Bs overnight. It will take us through the Lake District, North Yorkshire Moors, and then through Ripon, York, Driffield, and onto Bridlington on our third day of cycling.”

Alasdair is aware he has his work cut out for him.

“I’m not a natural athlete,” he admits. “I only discovered my love of cycling fairly recently. The idea of three tough days of cycling in a row is genuinely terrifying, but raising money for a great cause will hopefully help me to push through the harder hills!”

Alasdair will be riding in aid of the local charity Loughborough Area Food Bank

2024’s charity fundraiser is in aid of the Loughborough Area Food Bank, which HA&W has been supporting for the last few years.

They’re a local charity giving aid and support to our community in times of need.

“Since we started raising funds for them, they have been able to expand their offering to include debt counselling and job readiness training. With your help, they can continue this amazing work.

“This a is great charity, dedicated to feeding those in need and helping with other aspects of their lives too. The charity runs a “Next Steps” service, mental health counselling, a youth club and a “Mums ‘n Tots” group, all from their base at New Life church.

“They look to reach out in creative ways to those in need in the local community, all of which costs money.

“And that’s where our charity fundraiser comes in.”

You can support Alasdair and the Loughborough Area Food Bank in several ways

If you feel you’d like to support Alasdair on his Way of the Roses challenge, here’s how:

If you’re comfortable donating online, you can visit our JustGiving page, where donations will be collected directly in aid of the charity. Alasdair will also be using this page to share details of training rides and other progress, so be sure to check in regularly.

For those of you who’d prefer to donate by cheque, please email Louisa at louisa@ha-w.co.uk or call the office. We will then send out a pre-paid envelope and Gift Aid form along with details for a cheque payable directly to the charity.

The final word goes to Alasdair: “To be kept up-to-date with my progress (if you’re not already on our mailing list), please let Lou know on the email address above and she’ll get you added.

“And finally, a big thank you in advance for your support, both from me and the Loughborough Area Food Bank”.
